Newsletter 11th March
Lent is traditionally a time of fasting. Isaiah 58.6-7 records the LORD as saying: “is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen? Is it not to share your food with the hungry?”
Taking this injunction seriously, as the PCCs of both Minsterley and Pontesbury have, at a time when the cost of living is under the kinds of pressures we haven’t seen since the 1970s, we have resolved to set up the Rea Valley Foodbank, a new organisation whose board will largely be made up of church members. To this end, I am writing to anyone reading this to invite you to consider joining this board. Longer term, I hope that it will not be too onerous and will be tasked with keeping a watching brief to ensure the smooth running of things. However, in the short term, there is likely to be an intense period over the next 3-6 months as we seek to get the new venture established. A little further down the road, there will be a role for volunteers (we will need lots) to donate food, transport food, serve clients and provide refreshments. For now, we need 4 people from any of our churches to help plan its setting up. If you are interested, please contact me.
Fiona’s funeral is confirmed for Friday March 18th at 1 p.m. at St George’s, followed by a reception at Pontesbury Public Hall.
We are sad to announce the death of Pat Evans, a former Tea Service attendee, whose late husband, Stuart, was a valued member of the St George’s choir. Pat’s funeral will take place at St George’s on Wednesday March 30th at 2 p.m.
We will be running an Alpha course at The Deanery on Tuesday nights, commencing 2nd May for 10 weeks. The course is aimed at anyone who wants to explore the Christian faith or is new to the faith or simply wants to brush up on the foundations. If you yourself or you know anyone who might be interested, do let us know. We are limiting places to 12. We will also need help with catering. If you would be willing to help prepare a simple meal for 15 people once or twice during the 10 week course, please speak to Fran for further details.
Lent lunches are continuing to run at St George’s on Wednesdays from 12-1 with a theme of “characters connected to the Passion” and in the Stiperstones benefice at various venues on Fridays at the same time.
A Lent Group is now up and running at the Deanery on Monday evenings at 7.30. Again, we are looking at various characters connected to the Passion. You are welcome to come along to any session.
Our annual meetings are fast approaching. If you want to join the electoral roll in advance of those meetings (and thereby be able to participate) now is the time to take action. Please contact your electoral roll officer (or a churchwarden) to get a form.
Holy Trinity Minsterley is hosting a fundraising afternoon for Ukraine from 3-4.30 this coming Sunday. There will be coffee and cake and an opportunity to donate much needed supplies (please see attached poster for further details)
The new bereavement group, jointly run by six local churches in Pontesbury and Minsterley has officially branded itself as Oasis. The group will run on alternate Tuesdays at Minsterley Methodist Chapel from 12-1.30 and is for anyone who has suffered recent bereavement, launching on March 22nd. Oasis offers lunch and companionship to people going through difficult times. We have plenty of volunteers to run the club. What we need now is your prayers and for guests to come. If you know anyone in the Minsterley/Pontesbury area who has lost a loved one and who might benefit from joining the group, please do refer them to us. Heather Ryder has kindly agreed to be the point of contact and may be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or 01743 790359
Introductory Safeguarding training is being offered at Westbury Church on Saturday 26th March at 9.30 a.m. This is vital training for anyone who hasn’t been able to do it online and is necessary for anyone who occupies a position of responsibility at the church. You will receive a certificate at the end of the morning.
Please pray for the 24 women who are attending the Imagine Day at Holy Trinity this Saturday, as they seek to explore what God has in store for them.
