Newsletter 10th December

Dear friends

One of the things I have been musing on this week is trees. Trees have taken quite a battering over this last week or so, as first storm Arwen and then storm Bara howled through our part of south Shropshire. Trees have come down, causing some significant damage, while the amount of debris has been phenomenal. Yet the remarkable thing is not how many trees have come down, but how many trees have survived intact. As I write, I can see from my study window two very tall conifers just the other side of our garden wall. They are swaying dramatically in the wind, but show no sign of falling over. We know the reason for this. Their roots travel deep and wide, providing a strong and stable base, whose value is only entirely revealed in the face of the storms.

Jesus told the parable of the wise man building his house on the rock to make much the same point. When the storms come, it is our foundations that will be tested. He was suggesting that the strongest possible foundations for our lives was his words. I can testify to the truth of this. If you are not quite so sure, then I recommend you dig deeper into his Word.

Growing Leaders

There are still three places available on the Growing Leaders programme, which begins at the end of January. Please contact Greg if you would like to know more.

Christmas Fayres

Thanks to all those who supported the Snailbeach and Shelve Christmas Fayres over the previous two Saturdays. The Snailbeach Fayre raised £500 (the attraction of Pam dressed as an elf drew people from far and wide) while the Shelve Fayre raised £440. Well done to church members and other supporters who worked have worked so hard.

Carol Singing at the Crown & Sceptre

We will be carol singing outside the Crown & Sceptre in Minsterley on Weds Dec 22nd at 7.15 p.m. for 20 minutes followed by mulled wine and mince pies. Please let Greg know if you are able to support this important community building event.

Habberley Music Night

Further to last week’s pictures of a wonderful concert at St Mary’s by Tin Soldiers and Paul Ricard, we can confirm that £561 was raised towards church funds. Thanks again to all those who came along.

New churchwarden for Holy Trinity

We are very grateful to Susan Lockwood, who has been approved by Minsterley PCC in the role of Acting Churchwarden of Holy Trinity Minsterley until the next APCM. Although this post has no legal standing, she will provide invaluable support to Bruce and Arthur and should be treated as any other churchwarden. She may be contacted at susanlockwood345@btinternet.com

Christmas Tree Festival

Following the very successful Crib Festival at Minsterley, which received many visitors and raised £350, St George’s is hosting its annual Tree Festival until Sunday.

Bibles

Minsterley PCC has agreed to provide bibles for the use of all worshippers. If you would like to sponsor one of these, please let Barbara Norsworthy know. The cost of sponsorship is £10 per copy.

Pop up larders

Good Neighbours are offering pop up larders in Pontesbury and Minsterley to ensure those who are struggling to feed themselves or their families over Christmas can get food. We will be collecting for the larders at both Pontesbury and Minsterley churches. Please give generously if you can.

Muddy Church

Our Christmas Muddy Church service will entail walking the village of Pontesbury looking at Christmas lights and listening to the Christmas story. We meet in church at 3.30 p.m. for tea and mince pies and then begin our walk at 4 p.m. All welcome.

Webmaster

Many thanks to Alistair Bates who has agreed to take on responsibility for the website of St George’s, meaning that he will be responsible for both websites across the group. If you need to contact him, you may do so via media.pontstip@gmail.com
