Newsletter 19th November
I recently discovered What Three Words. You may have come across this app which identifies any site in the world by three random words. Each footprint is very small so that my kitchen and living room have different codes. This seems to me to be particularly useful having moved to Shropshire, where so many people avoid house numbers and sat nav will only take you within 100 yards of someone’s post code and then expect you to work out the rest. I have spent many hours, as I may have mentioned before, utterly lost trying to find someone who lives at New Home Farm or Oaks Paddock. What Three Words potentially takes me to their front door. I am thinking of making it a condition of being accepted onto the electoral roll.
Meanwhile, yesterday at the lunchtime eucharist at Derby Cathedral (a long story), the President reminded us that the Church was commemorating Hugh of Lincoln that day (no, I hadn’t heard of him either). He recited the collect which celebrated Hugh’s wise and cheerful boldness. This reminded me of what three words. These are the three words that the Church has decided should apply to Hugh of Lincoln who died in 1200. I wonder what three might apply to you or me?
Please do come to our group healing service at St George’s this Sunday at 6 p.m. The service will include meditation, anointing with oil and holy communion. We will be praying for service beforehand at 5.15. Anyone is welcome to join us.
We will be offering interactive crib services on Christmas Eve with a dramatic presentation at both Minsterley and Pontesbury. Anyone willing to help with this by performing or helping with costumes should speak to Greg.
Music Night at Habberley
There is a music night at Habberley (please see attached poster) in aid of funds for St Mary’s in the church. The evening of Jazz/Blues/Folk is being led by Tin Solider with Paul Ricard as guest; and takes place on Friday 26thNovember at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are £10 and available from Pauline at 01743 790784 or email@example.com Pearl on 01743 790495 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Three people from the Pontesbury and Stiperstones family joined others from the Deanery in hearing more about the Growing Leaders programme on Monday. The consensus was that many potential course participants are daunted by the word “leader” which is somewhat misleading and perhaps suggests it’s designed only for churchwardens or people who stand up front at church. This is not the case, the definition including anyone who has some responsibility in the life of the church. We are still keen to fill several more places. Do be in touch with Greg if you want to know more.
There is a meeting at the Methodist Church in Minsterley to discuss the possibility of setting up a bereavement group to serve our communities. This is a wonderful opportunity to work in partnership with Christians from other denominations. If you come along on Monday 22nd Nov at 11 a.m., you will be very welcome, with no ongoing commitment assumed.
There is a listening event on Saturday 27th November at St George’s for the whole Deanery. This will be attended by the Bishop and Archdeacon in an attempt to find out what the lay people of Pontesbury Deanery think about the mission and operation of the Diocese. There is encouragement for both fans and critics to attend. The meeting is scheduled to take place between 10.30-12. It is a ticketed event (although tickets are free and can be obtained by visiting https://www.hereford.anglican.org/calendar/event.php?event=282&monthly_view=grid&calendar_category_id=0
